Dunwich Dynamo Preparations

Nick spent last night making sure his bike, lights etc were all ready for the Dunwich Dynamo this weekend, while I went out to dinner with a friend.  We did invite him, but his dedication to the bike is such that dinner with two lovely ladies wasn't nearly as interesting!  A little diversion from DunRun though ... if you live in North East Surrey, Ray's Kitchen, in Walton-on-the-Hill, serves the most delicious curry, and the staff there are lovely.  Give them a try.  They've only been open about 6 weeks, and I hope they are there for a long, long time.
If you don't know what DunRun is all about, it's a night ride from London Fields in Hackney, to the beach in Dunwich, on the Suffolk coast.
People mill about at London Fields for a bit, and then, between 8pm and 10pm set off for the coast.  The route is available to purchase at the start, for the princely sum of £1, with the proceeds going to a cycling charity.  There is no entrance fee or anything like that .. it's semi organised.  You really, just turn up and ride.  Although it is possible to just follow other riders, I urge you all to splash out a pound for the route sheet ... its for a good cause, and you will get far more than a pound's worth of enjoyment from the ride.

There are plenty of places to stop along the way for refreshments (pubs stay open, cafe's open early, firestations run barbecues.  It's an all round festive event, and if you cycle, have a go.
It takes place on the Saturday night closest to the full moon in July each year.  I'm not entirely sure how word gets out of which weekend it is, but somehow it all happens.
This year's DunRun will be a bit different in our household to previous year.  Up until now, while Nick has been cycling, I have been helping at a feed station halfway along the route, but this year, for the first time, the feed station will not be there.  I shall miss the chat and banter with the cyclists.
This year will also be different because it's the first year of DunRun that we have a camper van, which means a lot less pressure to sleep as much as possible during the day on Saturday, so that being up all night and then driving home isn't a nightmare of exhaustion.
The plan is for Nick to cycle as usual, and for me to take a leisurely drive up to near the finish, and sleep in the van, let Nick have a few hours shut eye when he finishes cycling, then drive back home.
I will take a bit of yarn work with me (haven't decided whether it shall be knitting or crocheting), because there will be quite a few hours to kill before it's time to snuggle down for the night.  I will also take my camera and a tripod, because I will probably be woken by cyclists in the early hours, so I may as well take advantage of the ultra early morning for a couple of sunrise pics over the sea.
